Too early?
So when is it too early to give up? Have the Sox done that already? Who do you think is going to insert that shot of adrenaline that the Sox appear to so desparately need? It does not seem that the team is clicking either offensively or defensively. In any other division, this start would just be troubling or worrisome, but with the Yankees and Rays in front, it will be difficult to catch up, since both teams are so strong. (I can see one or the other stumbling, but not both, barring significant injuries of course).

The only thing that comes to mind is "Are you f-ing kidding me?" It's early May. We're 6.5 back of the Rays, 5.5 back of the Yankees. Give it some time. No one's packing it in.... yet.
I guess my question was more leveled at who was going to pick up the Sox. It is very early, but I am not seeing the fire that so many other good Sox teams have had. When the Sox lose to bad teams like the Orioles, it is hard not to wonder what these guys are thinking.
Also, can they overcome a slow start (as the Yankees have done over the last several years) or did the Sox need to come out of the gate quickly? A friend pointed out how the championship Orioles teams would always start out kind of dogging it, then turn it on in the summer. Will the Sox need to change the team to get them clicking or will they be able to do it with their existing team?
I think you're over-interpreting the need to "get clicking." They clicked just fine last night. They need to put out their best lineup consistently, game after game, and they need to *hit*.
As for who is going to pick them up, there are many great candidates, starting with Youkilis and Pedroia and extending to new Sox like Cameron. Plus Francona knows a thing or two about motivation.
Also: Tampa and NYY have good pitching, but not *this* good. They'll come back to earth a little bit.
This is why the season is 162 games long.
While this was partly a question that was tongue in cheek and partly due to frustration, it is a legimate question. The Rays started out 9-14 last April, ending up with a 84-78 record. Would their season have been different if they started out 14-9 or 17-6 as they have started out 2010? As they ended up going 75-64 the rest of the season, it is certainly a possibility that it could have made a difference if they felt they were in a closer race with the Red Sox.
