We're nearly through the first month of the season, and the Sox couldn't be more mediocre: 11-11, smack in the middle of the division.
So . . . where are we headed?

We are headed to dulls-ville, and we plan on taking what ever route is the least entertaining, but provides the best gas mileage, for the least amount of acceleration, and takes at least 5hrs a night.
Tim, interesting that you ask this question. I was going to do a post this morning at 4:30 AM but was able to go back to sleep. It was going to be on the cumulative effect good pitching or bad pitching can have on a team on a number of different levels (I think I'll still try and write it as it's an interesting topic).
The key in this instance is that the Red Sox have now won 7 of 9 and have seen two stellar pitching performances from Buccholz and Lester -- two of the young guns they expected great things from. These great performances came at exactly the right time following Beckett's egg-laying Monday night (don't be surprised to see him go on the DL for 3-4 weeks). BTW, the team we saw Tue/Wed night against the Jays -- not a great team but a scrappy young team we've had trouble playing at the Rogers Center -- is exactly the team that Theo expected when architecting the blue print. Great pitching, great defense, timely hitting and an outcome of 2-0 or 3-1.
-Aaron, I respect your outlook given how bad the Sox hitting has been but their pitching WILL come around and they will likely get Adrian Gonzalez (or someone like that) in July to provide a big spark off the bench. And to that end, if Papi doesn't come around by the end of May, mark my words he will end up on the A's with the Sox eating 90% of his remaining salary.
It is funny to look at two teams with virtually the same record - the 11-11 Sox and the 12-10 Nats. On the one hand, I am not excited about the Sox scrappy play and mediocre starting pitching. On the other hand, I am excited about the Nats scrappy play and mediocre starting pitching. I know that it is more than likely that these teams will head in different directions, but funny what expectations can do, both low and high.
We're generally headed up, Tim. Sox have won 7 of 9 and pitching and offense have generally been better in the last week.
Still have concerns about the overall defense, the inept play behind the plate (Sox catchers have thrown out exactly *one* baserunner through the first 22; the other two "caught stealings" came via Lester pickoffs), the bullpen, and the bench (what's going to happen with Papi and Lowell, for example?).
But I do think they're through the worst of it!
Is this a good time to mention my mancrush on Adrian Gonzalez?
Tim - this may be the BEST time. Maybe give your pal Theo a call too and remind him...
