David Ortiz...What to say?

I'm not surprised, none of us should be, we all knew in our hearts that this was most likely true.

But I do have some questions:

I'm shuffling through all of my thoughts, but ultimately I'm more disappointed because he lied so vehemently. Ortiz took such a strong stance against the steroid users in order to prove to us that he was not only a better player, but a better person, than those caught. Ultimately though, he is just one of many who tried to get a leg up through a needle, he's no longer special.

Today, he's just David Ortiz and no longer Big Papi.

There are excuses and there are homers. As much as it pains me, I think there is obvious taint on the rings.
How one handles the situation now will determine how I feel about him going forward. Evasion and 1/2 truths will get him no where.
Honesty will be key to him getting beyond this.

Kyle/Aaron, sadly, I couldn't agree more. I really hope that Ortiz does the right thing.

I'm wondering if Papi really just found out he had tested positive the other day, or if he had known for a while. I'd read somewhere that all the players on "The List" had been notified sometime ago. If Ortiz was told, say, a year ago, his remarks about punishing steroid users sound even stranger.

Sorry, but at least not for now, I'm not buying the "it taints the titles" argument. Why? Because just about everyone was juicing. Hitters. Pitchers. Heck, probably even the coaches and batboys :)

Chad Finn had a blog post on Boston.com recently showing that all teams back to 1996 had at least a player or two (and often a major player) who'd done steroids. So if the Red Sox' titles are tainted, so are all the others for the last decade-plus.

For better or for worse, we'll never truly know who was juicing when and how the games and seasons would have turned out differently if they were all clean. It's impossible to even speculate.

Is this my way of condoning Ortiz, Manny, and the others for taking steroids? Nope. I'm still disappointed. But Red Sox are still 2004/2007 champs.

First of all, I'm a diehard Yankee fan. I don't like Ortiz, and I certainly don't like the Sox. With that being said, I don't think their well-deserved championships are tainted. This is the steroid era. It is what it is. Over the last 10-15 years, a number of different teams have won the World Series, and how many of those teams do you think have someone on "the list?" I would be willing to bet a fair amount.

As for Papi...well, he ain't so big any more, now is he. Personally, I can't understand how the Sox justify his $13,000,000 paycheck in 2009.
